Some people swear by Dreft, but I just used ALL, the dye free and fragrance free one. It comes in a white bottle with a white cap. No fabric softener since a newborn’s skin is so sensitive. I would wash all new clothes because the clothes contain chemicals to help them stay wrinkle free and not pick up odors around them. Also, you never know what happens in the factories where these are made. Most of our clothes are made overseas and the working conditions there are HORRIBLE and UNSANITARY. I washed my baby’s clothes a few weeks before he was born and by the time he was 2.5 months, I tried to see if he reacted to a week’s worth of onesies washed with scented detergent and fabric softener. He was fine by then. Good luck!
they make baby laundry soap but it is a little pricey, the best stuff to use is Deodorant and dye free try the Tide or ALL. You may want to pre-soak stains cause these dye free products are not as effective as the regular.
I would use a free&clear detergent, like All Free & Clear, to be on the safe side in case baby has sensitive skin. I would not buy the baby detergents, like Dreft. They really are a waste of money. I would wash everything before letting baby use/wear it to make sure it is free of any factory chemicals or junk picked up at the store.
you can use any detergent that’s dye/fragrance/allergen free – you don’t have to spend an arm and a leg on a brand like Dreft, for example. you should wash new baby clothes, they’ve been in warehouses and factories and handled by all sorts of people….
if you’re washing like the padding for a carseat or walker, make sure you use cold water or it may shrink and not fit when you put it back.
Definitely wash brand new clothes, or clothes that have been packed away for awhile…there are so many things (dust, germs, chemicals from the factory) that could be on them that you don’t want to expose a little one too.
As for what to wash them with, there are a number of answers you’ll get.
#1 is probably going to be Dreft. It’s “the” detergent to use. It’s also REALLY expensive. Like $11 per small bottle where I live. So I tried Baby Purex. It works well (my son doesn’t have sensitive skin, if yours does you *might* have to try Dreft or something even more expensive, gulp!), smells even better, and is more like $3 a bottle at P&C.
Some people don’t use a special detergent at all, they mix everything together and never have a problem. If your baby has sensitive skin though, you’ll have big troubles from doing this. It may be cheaper (though not very, if you use Purex or another generic instead of Dreft), but it’s not worth it when your baby is covered in a full body rash because the soap (and the coloring in the soap!) is so harsh on his newborn skin.
Don’t forget to hang dry or tumble ALL baby clothes on LOW even though it’s slow…the last thing you want to do is shrink them so they don’t fit before he/she even gets to wear them!
We started out with Dreft which is dye and frgrance free for allergies or sensitive skin. Then we found that All makes the same stuff for a 3rd of the cost. Its called All Free and I think Purex makes one too!
I just used my normal detergent and t was fine, but they do make baby detergent (Dreft). Also, yes you should wash all clothes and blankets before you let baby use them.
You can purchase any detergent that is dye free and fragrence free and that is safe and gentle enough for babie sensitive skin. Dreft is one option but there are others out there that are not so expensive. Target has a generic brand that has the same ingrediants as Dreft and you can purchase others from Walmart that are cheaper than Dreft. I would recommend you wash new and used clothing in the detergent.
Yes, always wash new clothes.
You don’t need to buy a special detergent like Dreft (and do NOT use Dreft on cloth diapers, ever), but do go for a dye- and frangrance-free detergent to avoid irritating baby’s sensitive skin. Do not use fabric softener with baby’s clothes, as that can be irritating.
Use Dreft or Ivory Snow at first. And do wash the new clothes.
After you’ve had the baby home for a few weeks, you can wash one outfit in whatever you normally do laundry with. Try it out on the baby, and as long as there is no rash you can continue to wash baby clothes with your regular wash.
I always hated the way those baby detergents smell and I’ve had 2 children that have had no problems with Tide. (The brand I normally use).
I should also add that neither me or my hubby have sensitive skin. If you are prone to skin rashes, maybe try washing something very small like a pair of socks so if the baby does develop a rash it won’t cover the entire body.
Once you know that you can throw the baby’s clothes in with yours, laundry will be much more simple. You’ll thank yourself.
I always washed my kids (when they were wee ones) separate from ours just because I used different detergent. I also washed all the new clothes before they wore them because of chemicals, etc. used in the making of the clothes. Like the other Moms have mentioned here, I used Dreft and I also liked Ivory Snow.
I’ve attached a link for you. Congratulations on your bundle of joy!!
I used to use Dreft detergent, but then I found All for babies and the All is much better, scent wise and price wise. My baby has had no allergic reaction from either of the two so if you’re looking to save a little money, and who isn’t, go with the All Baby.
you can use dreft ,it works well. but there is no reson that you can’t use whatever u r using right now,the only reason u wuold NEED to use dreft is if your baby had very sensitive skin
I have a 4 month old and this question was a concern to me also.I feel like you would want your baby’s clothes soft and clean.me too.So, I started to use Dreft and you can also use All also.Dreft has my daughter’s clothing smelling so good and they are clean and soft. But, you decide this is only my opinion.
I recommend DREFT, regardless what detergent you use wash all her clothes and if possible try ironing the ones she’ll be using the first couple of weeks it takes the cold and moisture out of them.. [old myth] i know i know
Get some Dreft detergent for babies. Yes, wash all the clothes before putting your baby in them.

Just wash them with other baby stuff, Use a baby washing detergent as well such as All Baby or Dreft! it makes your home smell nice too!
Use any hypoallergenic detergent (ie dye and fragrance free). Don’t use fabric softener. It’s the dyes and fragrances that can irritate baby’s skin.

BABY SOAP AND BABY WATER.
yes they say to prewash all new clothes, though i don’t always remember to, and sometimes i like the brand-new-starched-look…
dreft is good but so is any detergent that is “free and clear”
use non biological powder that the best for babys skin
fabric softener fairy non bio is best even for exma problems

Dreft, and I would wash all clothes before you let your child wear them, even if they are new, you never know who handled them before you did.

You should wash all of your babies things in a baby detergent. (Dreft, All, etc.)
