Bleach
bleach them thoroughly…and wear a respirator mask. Mold can throw off microscopic spores you can inhale, which could potentially make you or your unborn child ill.
I would say wash them in bleach. but you should not be handling mold and I wouldnt trust any mold around any young child! mold can make you very sick!
Your mother is right.. You should try to avoid mold because if you have an allergic reaction you can’t take anything.. You can’t use regular bleach on the baby clothes. It’s too harsh and of course, will ruin all the colors. What you can try is washing them in very hot water with a bleach alternative first. Then rewash in a more baby friendly detergent. Preferably something hypo-allergenic. It may take 2-3 washings but you should be able to save the majority of the clothes. And as an fyi, you can’t store clothes in a damp environment such as a basement. You should have put them in a cedar chest or wrapped them and put them in a dry closet.
Throw them out. Many types of mold are toxic. It’s a shame to throw it all away, but I wouldn’t use it. Next time I would use rubbermaid totes instead.
I personally would just throw them all away. Just my opinion though. And your mother is right you should not deal with mold while pregnant. If you absolutely have to, then wear a mask. You should also think about getting a dehumidifier to place in your basement, to prevent the growth of mold, as this can make you very sick.
Congrats on the pregnancy!!
i say if you wanna to try and give em a washing…..then have some else bring them up and throw them in the wash….being very careful not to throw them around and stir up anything.
Not bleach though, like another said the bleach will only ruin them. But oxy clean will be fine. Also white vinegar.
But, you have to consider that the mold will stain them beyond repair…..in my experience, I have never been able to remove black and greeen mold specks and stains from clothing. Good luck though.
Do you mean mildew? If it has a slight mildew smell it is probably fine. Wash on hot, with oxyclean and detergent. Maybe a couple washes. Dry on hot and then see how they seem.
Bleach obviously is going to ruin anything that isn’t white, but oxyclean has good germ killing power to. Wash, dry and see how it goes.
If they are COVERED in MOLD throw them away. If they just smell a bit mildewy, just wash them.
U shouldnt be dealing with mold while pregnant. U can breathe it in and mold spores can form on our lungs and harm your baby.
I would throw those clothes away. The only way to kill the mold would be bleach but the bleach on the clothes will not be good at all for the baby as it is to strong and the clothes will smell bad anyway. Next time you store baby clothes use a plastic container that way this wont happen!
I know it sucks those clothes are ruined but its not worth you or your babies health being compromised!
Is there visible mold on the clothes, or they just smell like mold from being damp and in the moldy boxes? If there is visible mold on them – throw them out. It will be pretty much impossible to get that completely out.
If they just smell a little moldy, you can boil them, wash them with bleach, or put them out in bright sunlight to dry. Any of those things will kill the mold. I would do it more than once – kill the mold, then wash again to make sure it all came out and make sure the smell is gone.
In the future, store your baby clothes in plastic tubs and get a dehumidifier for your basement.
As far as dealing w/ mold while pregnant, I don’t think it’s a big deal. Just to be safe, try not to breath too much of it in. Taking care of it in a well-ventilated place is also a good precaution. Also, if all these boxes are damp and moldy, likely other things in your basement are as well. Is there mold growing on the walls or floor? I would be more concerned about being around that, which is still living and growing and giving off spores, than just the minimal exposure involved in throwing a load of clothes in the wash.
forget that. throw all that clothing away. do not put that old clothing on the baby.
